The collection of six Steinbeck stories (Tortilla Flat, The Red Pony, Of Mice and Men, The Moon is Down, Cannery Row, The Pearl) puts him firmly on my list of my favourite authors. I had really loved reading Grapes of Wrath back in high school, and I think I'll have to read it again. Tortilla Flat can be skipped, but the remaining five are excellent. One thing I found interesting is that Steinbeck uses British spelling, but perhaps that is because this particular book was printed in the UK and imported into Canada. It is well worth reading John Steinbeck's Wikipedia entry, and also the Wikipedia entries for some of his stories that are linked from that page.
