Beautiful Text

I love typography, so my jaw dropped when I saw Raph Levien's latest work: FontFocus, an algorithm to improve the screen rendering of fonts. Take a look at the pictures at the beginning and right at the end. The difference is subtle yet clear. It renders text a bit more clearly than Microsoft's ClearType on an LCD screen, which is pretty incredible because ClearType is probably the current state of the art. This must mean, according to Jakob Neilsen's logic, that FontFocus can save your company $2 500. I think Apple should leap at this opportunity to improve the appearance of their operating system, since this is one area where they lag behind Microsoft.
